According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 3,500 people died as a result of a drowning accident in 2005. An additional 710 people died as a result of a boat related drowning accident.
The CDC report states that children between the age of 1 and 14 account for more than one-fourth of all drowning accident fatalities. For every child that dies in a drowning accident, another four children receive emergency department care for water related injuries, according to the CDC report.
